CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1              Introduction

1998 marks Honda’s 50th anniversary as a company.  Honda was founded in 1948 as a local company with a global vision.  Today, we are global company with a local vision.
The driving force behind Honda’s growth was the leadership of its founders Mr Soichiro Honda and Mr Takeo Fujisawa.  The most valuable legacy which our founders gave to our company is philosophy.  This Honda Philosophy will continue to serve and guide companies and associates within the Honda Group.
For 50 years by maintaining an enterprising spirit and a free, open minded culture.  Honda has supplied products and services that have created relationships with customers and business partners all over the world.  Society’s expectations of Honda and our responsibility to the world are now greater than ever.
As a result, we must create a more challenging measure of our success- it is not enough simply to be accepted by society.  Through the way we conduct business, it is our goal that people all over the world will want Honda to exist.  Of course, it is the associates who bring the company philosophy to life.  Thus it is critical that Honda Philosophy be fully understood, respected, shared and translated into action by every Honda associate around the world.
In this way, the 50th anniversary of Honda will lead us to envision our future by building on the past.  Toward that end, we have added some new perspective to the philosophy, which was last revised in 1992. These latest change further clarify how Honda and associates must interact together, with our business partners, customers, society and the environment.

1.2              Our Fundamental Beliefs

The center of Honda’s corporate philosophy is the Company Principle which was written in 1956.  Underlying the Company Principle are our two fundamental beliefs:
a.       Respect for the individual
                                                             i.            Respect for the individual recognizes the following core concepts:
ü  Initiative
ü  Equality
ü  Trust
b.      The Three Joys
ü  The joy of Buying
ü  The joy of Selling
ü  The joy of Creating

1.3              Honda Management Policies

Honda established five management policies to guide associates in the performance of their daily responsibilities.  These management policies will help all associates to put the mutually shared company philosophy and company principle to practice.
Also, those in management positions have the responsibility to not only pursue these policies on a personal level, but to create a working environment where their subordinates can pursue and manifest these policies.
All associates are encouraged to put these policies in practice, observing together the freedom of associates to seek out a better way, the ‘challenging spirit,’ and corporate sincerity which serve as Honda’s corporate culture.
Here are the original management policies:
·         Proceed always with ambition and youthfulness.
·         Respect sound theory, develop fresh ideas and make the most effective use of time.
·         Enjoy your work, and always brighten your working atmosphere.
·         Strive constantly for harmonious flow of work.
